UAE doctors warn young people against unhealthy lifestyle

As people around the globe mark World Heart Day, doctors are warning that even young people need to take care by managing their lifestyles and taking care of their hearts.

The issue was highlighted in July this year by the death of Egyptian actor Amr Samir, who died of heart failure at the young age of 33.

A recent survey of social attitudes in the UAE found that many residents are concerned about cardiac illnesses. The survey – which was commissioned by Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi – queried over 1,000 UAE nationals and residents and found that 44 per cent of people feared dying of heart illness, with 76 per cent of respondents saying they believed people under the age of 40 should be more concerned.

Notably, people between the ages of 18 and 29 were significantly  less likely to be aware of the role that family history can play in the development of heart disease; with over half – 51 per cent – saying they believed it isn’t a factor.

“The results show that heart disease is a real and present concern across the whole community in the UAE and the region, and that more people are looking for support in managing their heart health,” said Dr Rakesh M. Suri, chief of staff and chief of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at Cleveland Clinic, Abu Dhabi.

Cardiologists are emphasising the importance of lifestyle choices when it comes to heart disease.

Statistics from Rashid Hospital show that one in every two patients who suffer from heart attacks are smokers. Heart attack cases are increasing at the hospital, with tobacco use topping the list of triggers.

However, to beat it, you would need to lose about 10% of your body weight – and keep it off.

The solution In an analysis paper in the BMJ, Mike Lean, professor of nutrition at Glasgow University, argues that giving tablets to reduce blood sugar (the main treatment for type 2 diabetes) only addresses the symptom. “Virtually everyone with type 2 diabetes is two or three stone [12-19kg] above their ideal weight,” says Lean. “One of the great tragedies is that we’ve known this for about a hundred years and all the treatments have ever done is reduce the blood sugar – this is the consequence, but what drives it is the weight.”

Lean says the easiest indicator of someone at risk of type 2 diabetes is a fat tummy. A man with a waist over 91cm (36in) or a woman with a waist over 81cm (32in) could both be on the path to the condition. Another paper in Frontiers in Endocrinology describes a programme of high-intensity exercise as a way of preventing type 2 diabetes developing in people with risk factors. But: “You can’t run off diabetes,” says Lean. He says evidence suggests most people need to lose more than 12kg. But studies show woeful remission rates (0.14% of 120,000 US patients who were followed up for seven years).

Lean is more optimistic, as his team is involved in a programme called Counterweight Plus, which a pilot study showed led to a third of people losing more than 12kg. The programme involves drinking formula shakes with a total of 820 calories for six to eight weeks, before reintroducing food that includes a lot less fat, and ideally no alcohol. The programme is being further evaluated and Lean says he is not pushing his own Counterweight Plus solution – people should ask their GPs for any evidence-based weight-loss programme. The rewards of weight loss are high. Not having type 2 diabetes any more (as long as you don’t regain weight) means not only no tablets for diabetes and no complications, but often the reversal of any high blood pressure, too.

Woman shares warning ‘black line on nail’ could be sign of cancer

A woman has shared a warning in which she claims that finding a black line down your nail could be a sign of cancer

According to Jean Skinner, who claims to be a beauty technician from Uckfield, East Sussex, a client came in asking for a nail colour dark enough to cover the black line on her nail.

Skinner urged her to visit the doctor about it, and she claims the woman then found out she had melanoma.

Writing on Facebook, Skinner describes the client as having “a straight dark vertical stripe down her nail,” which, she says, many people had told her was due to lack of calcium, hereditary or a blood blister.

“This is melanoma!!!” Skinner wrote. “I did not want to frighten her but I told her she needed to see her doctor immediately! She called me today to tell me that yes it was a very aggressive melanoma that has already spread to her lymph nodes!! Her prognosis is not good!”

Skinner is now urging people to pay attention to abnormalities in their nail beds, even though, she points out, “odd changes in your nails can very likely be nothing to worry about.”

The Facebook post has been widely shared, with people commenting on how scary the warning is.

But according to official NHS guidelines, “dark stripes running down the nails (linear melanonychia) are fairly common in black people over 20 years of age, and in most cases it’s perfectly normal.”

They do advise, however, that dark stripes on nails shouldn’t be ignored because they could in fact be a sign of subungal melanoma, a form of skin cancer that affects the nail bed. If you find a dark line, you should see your doctor to check it isn’t melanoma.

“Subungual melanoma usually only affects one nail,” the NHS explains. “It will also cause the stripe to change in appearance – for example, it may become wider or darker over time and the pigmentation may also affect the surrounding skin (the nail fold).”

Melanoma makes up four per cent of total cancers in the UK and it has become 119 per cent more common since the early 1990s, according to Cancer Research UK.

Symptoms can occur in various places of the body, including under fingernails, between your toes or on your scalp.

“Symptoms of melanoma under your nails include dark areas or marks,” Professor Sanchia Aranda, CEO of Cancer Council Australia, told 7 News.

“Elsewhere on your skin, as well as keeping an eye out for new moles or spots, look for moles or spots that change colour, have a variety of colours, are getting bigger or have an uneven border or develop a lump within them.”

Here, we chat to celebrity dentist Dr Richard Marques about the different ways your teeth, mouth and, in turn, general physical health can suffer at the hands of stress, and what you can do about it.

Translucent / shortened teeth

Normal, healthy teeth should be opaque, but some people may notice the edges of their teeth becoming somewhat translucent – or even shortening over time.

“This may be due to Bruxism, otherwise known as grinding of the teeth. You may need a bite guard to protect the teeth from wearing further.”

Most of the time, people who grind their teeth or clench their jaw aren’t aware they are doing it or do it while they are asleep, which is why a mouth guard is the most successful treatment method – at least until you bite through it!

Aching / clicking jaw

It is estimated that up to 30% of adults will experience an aching and / or clicking jaw at some point in their lives. This is sometimes referred to as temporomandibular disorder (TMD) or myofascial pain disorder.

“This is a common sign of stress. You may need a treatment for the jaw, such as a special splint or even Botox to relax the muscle.”

Sometimes, people develop TMD without any obvious causes.

Bleeding gums

A small amount of blood in the sink when you spit out toothpaste might not seem like a big deal, but consistently bleeding gums should not be ignored.

“Bleeding gums are a symptom of gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis), which can be caused or exacerbated by stress. You might need a gum treatment, such as a deep clean (root planning).”

You should also visit your dentist to check that your brushing and flossing routine is correct.

Dental abscesses

A dental abscess is a collection of pus – caused by a bacterial infection – that can form inside the teeth, gums, or bone around the mouth.

“An abscess can sometimes occur during times of stress, as your body’s ability to fight off infections can become compromised. Antibiotics or further treatment will be required for this.”

Although dental abscesses rarely cause long-term problems, they can be painful and need attention – as they do not go away on their own. Always see your dentist or GP.

Root canal problem

Damaged tissue or infections within the root canal can be extremely painful – as can the treatment for it. A good reason to keep your stress levels down!

“Issues with root canals – the area inside the tooth – can be caused by stress if the grinding becomes so severe that the nerves of the teeth are exposed. Root canal treatment may then be needed to remove the nerve from the teeth.”

Bad breath

Bad breath, otherwise known as halitosis, is thought to affect as many as one in four people in the UK.

“Stomach acids can build up in times of stress, potentially leading to acid reflux and other compounds that cause bad breath. If this becomes a concern, you will need to see your GP and may need treatment with antacids or other medication. If it persists, further investigation into the stomach lining may be required.”

Simple thing you should do before bed every night to ensure a perfect night sleep

Research has revealed the formula for a perfect night’s sleep – a room temperature of 16 degrees Celsius, curling up on your right hand side… and a few pages of a good old fashioned book before bed.

The study also revealed that to achieve zen-like sleeping conditions you will also need two pillows and a bedroom painted white.

And for the perfect night’s sleep, you should leave at least 37 minutes from when you last check your phone to attempting to fall asleep.

Your optimum sleeping time should be eight hours, and the perfect time to go to sleep is 10:39pm.

And controversially, 44 per cent of people believe they sleep BETTER when their partner isn’t in the bed with them, with women more likely to turf their other half out to improve their sleep quality.

The poll of 2,000 Brits, commissioned by eve Sleep, asked them to name everything that helped give them the perfect night’s sleep.

Jas Bagniewski, founder and CEO of eve Sleep commented: “At eve we’re on a nationwide crusade to encourage people to join the sleep rich – that army of people who start the day looking and acting well rested and full of energy.

“This poll confirms that as a nation we’re wise to the basics, like getting a solid eight hours.

“It still seems though, that we have some way to go towards actually putting this knowledge into practise: whilst we all know that looking at our phones isn’t helpful for example, almost a third of us are still doing it less than 10 minutes before trying to drop off.”

It also emerged four in 10 Brits can’t get to sleep unless the room is completely dark, and a quarter can’t drop off unless there’s a total absence of noise.

More than three in 10 Brits read a paper book before bedtime to help them sleep, three times as many as use an e-reader.

And one in five think having sex before bedtime is the best way to guarantee a restful night’s kip.

The majority of the nation sleeps on their right hand side, with their legs curled up, and just one in 20 sleep on their back.

Brits also live up to their repressed national stereotype by being most likely to hit the hay in full pyjamas, with under a quarter going to bed in the buff.

One in four Brits can’t even remember the last time they had a good night’s sleep, with many saying their lack of slumber is due to the temperature in the bedroom being too hot.

And three in ten say their partner’s incessant snoring is what keeps them lying awake at night.

Jas Bagniewski said: “Interestingly, a massive 50% don’t sleep well because they are too hot, and the good news is that really IS easy to fix.

“A breathable mattress can make a significant difference. Couple that with bedding made of a breathable fabric like linen which allows for good airflow and absorbs moisture, and you should see a very fast improvement.

“With the nights drawing in there’s no time like the present to perfect both your sleep environment and your bedtime habits.”

Half of the nation believe they’re more irritable after a poor night’s sleep, and one in five admit they’re more likely to eat junk food and are even prone to nodding off during the day.
